Gravel Field Notes
03 / Place notes

The Flint Hills ask you to look farther ahead.

Rolling tallgrass prairie and gravel roads make a beautiful, exposed classroom. Openness can also mean little shade, shelter, or easy resupply.

What the landscape changes

Surface, sky, and distance are all part of the route.

Expect rollers, rough stretches, and roads that change after rain. Wind has no trees to negotiate with. Heat accumulates; cold and storms arrive quickly. Cell service and stores are not guaranteed.

That is context, not a fixed course description. Route files, checkpoints, cutoffs, and rules change by edition.

Field habits

  • Download route/local map; do not rely on cell signal.
  • Carry food and water for the longest plausible gap.
  • Watch the whole-route forecast; have a storm/heat decision.
  • Stay between fences and on the road. Yield to traffic, ranch activity, and livestock.
  • Carry every wrapper and leave no trace.
